April 2024 SFU Medical School Update

April 29, 2024

Navigating Forward in Approval Process

The Full Program Proposal (FPP) for the School of Medicine was approved by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (SCUS) on April 18 and put forth to the Senate Committee on University Priorities (SCUP) for discussion and deliberation in its next meeting in May. In addition to the FPP, SCUP will also consider a motion to approve the creation of the SFU School of Medicine. If the motions are approved by SCUP, they will be presented to the Senate of SFU for full debate and approval in mid-May. And upon Senate approval, the motions will then be brought forward to the Board of Governors in late May for its review and approval.

Two of Three Community Engagement Sessions Completed

In recent weeks, SFU hosted community engagement sessions in Surrey and Abbotsford, drawing a diverse array of community leaders who responded to SFU's invitation for participation. These sessions provided an invaluable opportunity for community members to share their insights and perspectives on the pressing health care needs in their areas. The next session, to be held in Hope, is scheduled for May 1.

Continued Team Expansion

The School of Medicine has added key members to its expanding team to spearhead curriculum development and accreditation efforts. Steve Birnie steps into the role of Director of Curriculum, and Dana Andrews is the school’s new Associate Director of Accreditation. Additionally, Yan Huang joins the School’s Administration team as Manager of Operations and Administrative Services, providing essential administrative, operational, and financial management as the School develops and operationalizes its plans. Priyadarshini Balaraman also joins as Building and Facilities Officer, lending crucial support to the coordination of renovations, projects, and maintenance of facility infrastructure and spaces. The School extends a warm welcome to Steve, Dana, Yan, and Priya.
